The Vancouver Fire Department serves a population of almost 266,000 from ten stations covering 89 square miles. A total of 13 frontline fire crews run over 28,000 calls per year. VFD does more than fight fires: its state-of-the-art Emergency Medical Service (EMS) program also provides paramedic first response to citizens in the VFD’s service area.

Other Applicants who pass the written exam with 70% or better, and have passed the PST CPAT since September 12, 2014 or later, will have their scores forwarded to city of Vancouver for further consideration. The city reserves the right to limit the number invited to continue on in the process.
Applicants who do continue on in the process will participate in a panel interview and behavioral traits assessment.
Applicants will be referred to backgrounds based on the rule of ten.
Applicants must be able to successfully complete a thorough background investigation; Chief's interview, psychological, and medical exam.

Current Hiring Status

Vacancies are filled by Civil Service "rule of 10" with the top ten scores being given to the appointing authority for further consideration and selection as a vacancy occurs. Vacancies may be filled from the Firefighter and Firefighter-Paramedic eligibility lists as determined by the City.
