Community Information

The South Bay Fire District is in the northern portion of Thurston County. The district is almost completely residential and is bordered by the Puget Sound to the north and Cities of Lacey and Olympia to the south.

Department Information

The South Bay Fire Department was first organized in 1953 by citizens in the area. The department consists of a Chief officer, Assistant Chief, Battalion Chief, three career lieutenants, five career firefighters and approximately 50 volunteers.  In 2015 our district merged with North Olympia Fire Dist. 7 and now serves over 12,000 residents within its 31 square mile area. We currently have two fire stations that are staffed 24/7 and respond to over 1,000 incidents annually. We share borders with the City of Lacey, the City of Olympia and the Puget Sound.

Current Hiring Status

The eligibility list is a continuous listing and maintained as scores are received from PST with oral board interviews conducted on an as-needed basis. Candidates must clearly demonstrate through their application materials that they meet the employment standards outlined above. All applications will be reviewed, and the most appropriately qualified individuals will be invited to continue in the selection process. Examinations for the position may consist of any combination of written, performance, and oral exams to evaluate the applicant's skills, training, and experience for the position. Successful applicants will be placed on an eligibility list for any future position openings.

Salary Information

All wages and benefits are negotiated by IAFF Local 2903. The 2019 pay for entry level firefighter starts at $57,793 with top step firefighters making $72,241.
