The Federal Way community is residential and commercial with a population employed locally and in neighboring cities such as Sea Tac, Kent, Tacoma, Bellevue and Seattle. An estimated 22,485 people are employed within the city limits. The city is approximately 22.48 sq miles.

The department is a nationally accredited, full-service law enforcement agency providing police services for the citizens, business owners and visitors of the City of Federal Way. Our agency is divided into four primary divisions: administration, patrol, investigations and civilian operations. The Federal Way Police Department was established in 1996.

Current Hiring Status

Once an applicant's score is received from PST it will be placed on an eligibility list upon approval by the Civil Service Commission and valid for one (1) year.  The eligibility list is a continuous listing that is maintained as scores are approved.  No one may be re-examined for the same class within 6 months of the effective date of successful examination.  After that time the Civil Service Secretary will consider the higher score from the applicant. 

Oral board interviews are conducted on an as-needed basis.   Skype interviews available upon request from out of state applicants only.  Vacancies are filled by Civil Service "Rule of Seven" with the top seven candidates forwarded to the appointing authority for background investigation & selection as vacancies occur.    www.FWRecruiting.com

Salary Information

$5,407 - $7,253/Month based on Experience level, + up to 10.25% additional Career Development pay (see website).

Incentives for Lateral Officers:

Hiring bonus of $7,500 for experienced police officers will paid in three equal installments of $2,500.  The following installments: first upon meeting requirements for the Equivalency Academy (medical clearance and firearms qualification); second successful completion of the six month probationary period; and third at one year anniversary date of hire.  Vacation leave bank of 50 hours and sick leave bank of 50 hours upon successful completion of the Filed Training Officer (FTO) program.
